Cool Breeze Scoop... How to Cool Those Hot Foot-Wells in Your Miata

By Rich Velardo

One of my forums to watch on Miata.net is the "And now, a word from our

sponsors..."forum. When a thread titled "New Cooling Concept"

(http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=177129) appeared my first

thought was; "Uh, oh here's a scam". But as I read the thread I found that

the poster (Bruce, screen name; BlackCherry04) was a respected forum

member, not some fly-by-night who was trolling for a quick buck,

furthermore he presented his product well and it sure sounded good. After a

couple of e-mails to Bruce I was rewarded with the first test version of the

scoop out of the injection mold to try. While not exactly as refined as the

production version, the surface finish is not right on mine for example,

Bruce promised that this scoop would at least work as well as the final

version that he was offering for sale soon.

Bruce's scoop is a relatively simple injection molded plastic piece that simply

clips onto the header of any 1st or 2nd generation Miata (the 3rd generation

scoop is coming). There are two Velcro like dots that stick to the inside of

the windshield header, but no other permanent attachments to the car or

moving parts. Neat and sweet as they say.

So does it work, or is all a scam to part the Miata owner out of his $$? Well,

to answer your skeptical question, it does work and it works quite well. I had

the opportunity to test the scoop on the recent Spring Miatas at Deal's Gap

trip and found that it sends a good stream of air down to the occupant’s

lower body and foot well area. Even at speeds as low as 25 mph a steady

stream of air was blown down to keep me cooler, so yes, it works. Installation

and removal is quick and easy too, I just wish that I'd thought of it first.

I will have a final production version of the scoop soon, it will be in the car

at all times and I will be happy to demonstrate the scoop for you. If you

chose to buy one, please mention that I recommended the scoop and that

you're from the Northcoast Miata Club, it's a good product and we can

support a fellow Miata enthusiast:
